Illuminating History Through Human Stories

Our model blends experiential, mobile learning with the powerful voices and legacies of San Diego’s Holocaust survivors, creating encounters that move beyond traditional classroom instruction. By meeting students and communities where they are—on their campuses, in neighborhood spaces, and through interactive digital tools—we remove barriers and bring this essential history directly to them.

Grounded in historical accuracy and enriched by survivor testimony, ethical reflection, and media literacy, our programs transform Holocaust education into a dynamic experience that builds empathy, agency, and moral responsibility.

A Legacy of Light

The Legacy of Light Goldberg Institute for Holocaust Education was founded through the extraordinary generosity and vision of prominent San Diego philanthropist Lee Goldberg and her family. Their investment, made in partnership with Jewish Federation of San Diego, established a bold commitment to ensuring that the lessons of the Holocaust continue to guide our community for generations to come.

Rooted in the belief that remembrance must inspire action, the Institute serves as a hub for innovative, accessible Holocaust education across San Diego. Through school partnerships, community programs, and mobile, interactive learning experiences, we bring historical understanding, survivor voices, and media literacy directly to learners of all ages.

“I experienced painful antisemitism as a young girl growing up in the aftermath of World War II. At the same time, I saw how survivors' stories were woven into the fabric of Jewish life. Those memories serve as powerful reminders of the importance of Holocaust education, especially in light of all that’s happening today. Only by learning from the past can we inform the present and the future.”

— Lee Goldberg

Lee Goldberg’s legacy—and Federation’s leadership—continue to shape our mission: to transform memory into a force for empathy, responsibility, and the courage to confront hatred in all its forms.
